The theme of the free spirit of man is quite common in Chekhov’s work. So our characters – Nina Zarechnaya and Alexander Timofeevich, leave for the capital, falling in love with each other and finding freedom in art. There they fall into the maelstrom of “artificial” environments and false friendships.


But what happens when “freedom” leaves the human spirit and becomes a reason for vulgar behavior, for audacity towards trivial creative expression and living accompanied by materialism, by the “external”, by kitsch and the desire for loud fame? And all this at any cost.
